I took a self defense course in college and they taught us this, and when I told it to my then-boyfriend, he laughed and said it was too extreme. That should’ve been my first red flag tbh

Teachers deserve better
Do teachers deserve better or do we deserve better teachers? Maybe a bit of both.
Teachers deserve better. I said what I said.
We’ll have better teachers when teachers get the working conditions they deserve. You think you can underpay and overwork people and still get the best of them? Nahhhhhhh
People are refusing to go into education because the pay is so low not to mention putting 30 students in 1 class and expecting teachers to handle all that plus buy supplies
Story time: I’m currently a 7th grade science teacher. In the district I came from, that meant I’d be teaching a life science curriculum and, when I was hired, that’s what I was told I’d be teaching in this district.
Instead of teaching science, however, I’m stuck teaching 11 and 12 year olds how to read and write because my school’s in such a low income area of the city that we’re considered the “worst” school in the district. Why? Because we have 90% English Learners and little to no support for them. What I was told when I started was that there would be support for these students. Instead, when I asked the resource teacher (aka person who is supposed to be giving us teachers resources to help out EL students) what I could do to help their language acquisition, I was told to give them vocabulary words and have them draw pictures and define the words in both English and their native language and that was it. I asked about translation software where I could plug in a Word document and get a copy in a language that I needed.
Nope, we don’t have that.
So, instead, I spend my time during my prep period, before school, after school, and on weekends translating my lectures and assignments into Spanish (as this is the language most of my EL students speak) using Google Translate.
Note: during this time when I’m able to do this, I also have to grade other papers, make new assignments, create lectures, create labs, create quizzes and tests, care for my cat, finish my Masters degree (damn TPA), eat, sleep, care for myself, etc. Want to know the real kicker? I am not getting paid for any work I do outside of the 7:20-2:30 time period.
In addition to all of this, I have a section that needs to be co-taught. That means I have at least 25% special education students in that class and need a special education teacher to help me out with adaptations and specifically assisting those students. It’s now halfway through October and I still do not have a co-teacher in that section. Not only does that screw me over, which I’m used to at this point, but that is screwing my kids over because that is my second largest class, at 34 students. 34.
So I have to deal with all of this mess, and that’s only a small portion of it, while barely making enough to pay my bills and have enough left over to save up for some needed things coming up. And sure, it’s screwing me over, but you know what this is doing other than that?
It’s screwing my kids over. I don’t want kids of my own because I get 180 new ones every year. These kids are my babies and you’ll be damn sure I fight for anything that gives my babies what they need to succeed in life. So screw you for saying that we need better teachers. We’re DOING our best given the circumstances. Give us better pay and more support and our best will be so much more.
