lol the fuck you gonna do when a student shoves their cell down their bra? That’s what I did. Wanna risk sexual assault and theft?

Uhh, nope. That’s when I call security. I don’t EVER touch my students. Like I said in the post, IF the situation calls for the phone to be confiscated, that’s not my job. Security can handle that. To be honest, though, I’ve never had a situation where a student hasn’t simply put away their phone and done the work. I just ask for it to be put away. I’m not aggressive when it comes to phones, I just want the students doing the work they’re supposed to. In a lab environment, they shouldn’t have the phones out in case of contamination with chemicals anyway. *shrug*

Also, like, putting the phone in the bra is technically listening to what I requested. The cell phone got put away. Unconventional, but still technically what I asked. I ain’t gonna judge.

Can anyone tell me how my response even escalated to someone asking me about if I wanted to risk such extreme charges? JFC. Does anyone actually think I would do something like that over a phone of all things? So not worth it. I got too many student loans to pay off for that crap dude.

back in freshman year of high school we had this teacher who was really fucking annoying and HATED cell phones with a fucking passion. at the beginning of the school year he had us sign this goddamned “contract” that we wouldn’t have it in class or he would confiscate it.

so this annoying douchebag kid was on his phone and the teacher went “you have to give it to me now you signed the contract” and the kid didn’t even look up and said “contracts signed by a minor are not legally binding” and continued to text. and i hated that kid but…..dare i say iconic

anyway he got detention for it but i just found out he got into law school this year

Ha ha ha nice try kiddo. That’ll get filed right alongside the “THIS IS A PRIVATE DEVICE YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE IT FROM ME” bullshit argument.

I wish people would stop trying to make teachers’ lives miserable. And then reveling in the fact.

Actually it isn’t bullshit. Minors can’t legally sign contracts. Parents have to do it for them. The minor has to undersign. Nice try looking like a jackass tho.

Also, legally speaking, a teacher cannot physically confiscate anything from you. They can threaten you with detention and try to coerce you into giving it up “voluntarily,” but legally speaking if they take it from you with force they are committing theft (and potentially minor assault).

Just saying no in a deadpan voice worked wonders for me.

So, a couple of things (from me as a teacher):

1. We can’t legally confiscate it, but we CAN have security do that. They have to call the parent and inform them immediate after, though. I know they also take a photo of the phone before it is taken so that they don’t get blamed for any damages that the phone has prior to confiscation. Granted, this is my school, your mileage may vary.

2. Students being on their phones is the single most aggravating thing for me. You should be focusing on the classwork, not on your phone. HOWEVER!!! If the student is doing INDEPENDENT work, I don’t see the problem with them listening to music at a reasonable volume (basically, I don’t want to hear their music through their headphones). I know I work better with music, and expecting my students to give up that advantage is, frankly, bullshit. Group work, labs, and lectures are cell phone red zones. Don’t do it.

Lotor: Oh please, you wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Hunk: You’re right. Because a fly is an innocent creature that never knowingly did anything to anybody.

Hunk: You, however, I would maim.

NYU students who back Trump afraid to show their faces

“They’re afraid of losing friends, being ridiculed in class, getting worse grades and are even afraid of being assaulted and physically hurt.”

good

no, not good. because if we hate them as much as Trump and his supporters hate certain groups, we are no better than they are.

yeah I am

“if you hate these bigots you’re just as bigoted as they are”

This “we’re no better than them” mentality makes the critical mistake that hate itself is the problem.

Hate is not the problem. At all. Hate can be constructive. Hate can be defensive and come from righteous outrage.

The problem is irrational hate towards innocent people.

Hating a racist is COMPLETELY fucking different from hating a race. A whole race didn’t do anything wrong. A racist did. Hating the racist is 100% proportionate, justifiable retaliation.

Fucking. Mic. Drop.

The reason that hate groups like the Klan have been driven so near to extinction is because of this exact thing. It became unfashionable to be publicly racist, and the backlash against those kinds of groups became unbearable for them. It drove them out of the limelight and into the very fringes of society.

This postmodern “hating the hate makes you just as bad” bullshit is what’s allowing them to re-prosper.

Fuck that.

Expose them. Make them lose their friends. Ridicule them in classes. If you can get away with it, beat their asses. Show them what it means that we will not go back to that way of life again. It’s time for the racists to be the ones who live in fear.

Hating bigotry does not a bigot make.

Imma just leave this here

All of this.

If you want monogamy to be taught as a conscious commitment rather than a default, clap your hands.

If you want jealousy and possessiveness to stop being viewed as healthy characteristics of passionate, loving relationships, and you /really/ want to show it…

If you support polyamory and you know it, clap your hands.

Hey so fun fact, my dad is good friends the woman who currently has this job and she told him that Trump’s admin is trying to force her out. They started advertising the job before they actually told her they were transferring her so she’d have to reapply.

Her name is Catherine (Cassie) Conley, and she’s a badass MIT grad that works as NASA’s planetary protection officer, which sounds super cool (though she says not as cool as the galactic administrator). The job is basically the only one in xenobiology (space life) and it’s her life’s work. She’s been doing this job for over 10 years and now Trump wants her out.

I’m beyond pissed that this keeps going around. I know it sounds like a joke job, but it’s a legitimate career that’s being taken away from literally one of the most intelligent women in the country by this asscactus of a presidency.

If ya’ll could signal boost this that’d be much appreciated. They need to know that this kind of bullshit isn’t acceptable

I was actually reading about this job in an NPR article and it sounds REALLY important. the job basically means you make sure we don’t contaminate any planets and anything we bring back like rocks or soil, etc doesn’t do the same here.
