Reasons Why JJ is a Great Character

itsjjpositivity:

time for more JJ positivity because some people don’t seem to understand the concept of not tagging their hate in a character’s main damn tag. Strap yourselves in, this is a long one.

  • Not only is he self-confident, he encourages his fans to believe in themselves too! I mean, did anyone listen to Theme of King JJ fully? “Whenever you feel standalone never shed a tear, If you always smile on face you’ll make it through the rain.” Not everyone is a fan of characters with too much self-confidence, however, I gotta say I could use some of it for sure.
  • He isn’t arrogant. Now bear with me here please. Someone with arrogance will look down on others and assume they themselves are better than they actually are. Not once do we see JJ actively being nasty or looking down on his competitors. From what we see, he’s a playful character 90% of the time when interacting with someone as easily annoyed as Yuri.

Like during most competitive events, teasing will occur. Not to mention, he has a damn right to be confident, like, holy shit!

  • He’s hardworking and headstrong af. This kid grew up with two parents who were ice dancing Olympic champions and damn right he wasn’t going to ride on their coattails! He created ‘JJ Style’ as a way to make his own path and despite past coaches telling him ‘no’ over and over again, guess what, he did it anyway! And now is one of the best skaters in the competition, doing jumps that even Viktor never attempted! AND HE’S NINETEEN!!! His self-confidence is earned!
  • He’s socially awkward. Okay, the scene where everyone is freaking out over Yuuri and Viktor’s wedding and JJ just bursts in like ‘HELLO GUESS WHAT I’LL BEAT YOU TO IT HAHA’

He basically said what everyone at that table was thinking, but attempted to join in on the hype by joking around. Sadly, it backfired and he doesn’t understand why. Honestly, I never related so hard lmao. The social awkwardness is real.

  • HE’S FLAWED. Every great character has flaws! Sadly, because JJ’s flaws are more ‘annoying’ to people, they are not appreciated as much. The most obvious flaw we see from him is that his ego is very apparent and he needs to take it down a notch at times. He tends to come off as obnoxious (which is why I HC him as having ADHD because damn, I relate lmao). He speaks his mind, like when he bursts in on the engagement celebration without a second thought. He has no filter! He also has very relatable traits such as succumbing to anxiety and pressure like any other human being could. His popularity and self-confidence doesn’t keep him susceptible to mental illness. He is human.
  • But damn is he resilient. Another reason JJ is a wonderful character. This 19 year old kid fucked up his entire short program and guess what? He still didn’t give up! JJ! NEVER! GIVES UP!

And even after a terrible failure, he forced himself to smile for his family and fans, to show he won’t give up and he loves and appreciates them! What a gem!

  • He’s humble too! This kid’s self confidence was shattered and we see this during his free skate in the final episode. And guess what, an arrogant person would believe they deserve praise no matter what. But what does JJ think?

He knows when and when he doesn’t deserve his fans’ support. His self confidence is obnoxious, but he knows when he doesn’t deserve praise. That’s not the trait of arrogance. JJ knows he is a good skater, but he knows when he fucks up and when he simply is not doing good.

I cannot help but become angry when people truly believe this boy didn’t deserve his bronze medal. JJ fought through a panic attack, but remained headstrong for the sake of his family and fans (which he genuinely believed would be disappointed in him if he lost, he seemed unaware his family and fans truly loved him, gold or no gold!), rose up to the challenge during his free skate and rightfully earned himself a place on the podium.

JJ may not be likable to all, but damn he is a fucking great character!
