Autism Early Intervention that could actually be useful :
- learning sign language
- access to AAC tools and materials
- introduction to sensory play
- adequate parent/caregiver education
- assessment for possible psychological/developmental/physical comorbidities
- acceptance of autistic children’s play styles
- using a child’s interests/strengths to foster growth
- creation of predictable school and home routine
- destigmatization of stimming in areas that should be safe for a child (home, school, etc)
Like, imagine if I’d been taught how to stim in ways that didn’t hurt me, or how to cope with unpleasant sensory situations, or even simply been allowed to say “no.” Imagine if I’d had physical therapy so I’d develop better coordination, and taught how to type and write at the same time. Imagine if I’d had activities to practice auditory comprehension. You know, instead of having to half-assedly figure out all of this on my own 5-15 years later. I’m 22 and I’m still trying to figure out how to handle a standard workplace environment.
Please let the children of the future be happy and free to be themselves, it’s bad enough that my friends and many more have had to suffer, please don’t let folks be coerced into passing as neurotypical and give them the tools they need to thrive and survive…
Also, if you plan to interact with children in any way, please take time to learn about these early intervention practices so that you can help educate others and potentially be able to interact with individuals on a level that is comfortable for them.
