friendy reminders to everyone who is just starting to get into comics:

  • you cannot read every comic. it’s physically impossible. both marvel and dc have been putting stuff out since the 1940s. you cannot read every comic- accept that fact early on.
  • you’re not gonna like every comic you read. you won’t like every artist or writer. if you aren’t enjoying a series, stop reading it! there are a zillion more you can choose from.
  • ask for recommendations! i started out with maybe two or three recommendations and spiraled out from there. there’s a series out there for everyone- if nothing sounds good to you, ask someone else!
  • wikipedia is your friend. because comic history is so vast, sometimes you’re just gonna have to go through wiki to find something or remember who someone is or read up on the backstory of a minor character (there are both marvel and dc wikias or the regular wiki).
  • there’s more to comics than just superheroes! if superheroes just aren’t your cup of tea, or if you just want something a little different, check out image, vertigo, boom, idw, dark horse, dynamite, archie, or other smaller publishers. some will have licensed comics for tv shows/movies (dark horse has tons of old star wars comics, idw has tons of stuff like x-files, orphan black, and star trek, titan has four different doctor who comics, boom has adventure time and similar animated shows) but they also have creator owned titles that can range from sci-fi to zombies to westerns to regular teenagers to honestly anything.
  • graphic novels are your best friend. they’ll collect full storylines from a series into one paperback or hardcover for your convenience!!! they’re usually 5-7 issues but i’ve seen some with as few as 4 and omnibuses with up to 30.
  • most importantly, you can’t read everything. there are so many comics. i feel like i’ve said this over and over again but it’s the truth. i read a lot of comics personally but for every comic i read a week, there are at least four that i don’t read. find what you love and go from there.

You can’t even read everything with the same title character oftentimes. You can’t read everything Batman or Wolverine or Betty Cooper. I mean, you could try, but you couldn’t succeed without probably putting your actual life on hold. Just browse. Pick favorites. Enjoy.
